Partnerships with community-based organizations have been instrumental in establishing and making assistive technology reutilization programs available statewide. STAR supports five reutilization centers to increase options for acquiring no-cost/low-cost AT for individuals with disabilities. STAR’s reutilization programs meet the needs of individuals of all ages with all types of disabilities. A variety of durable medical equipment and other assistive technology devices are available with no disability or age restrictions.
Donations are obtained by various means (family members/advocates of individuals with disabilities, individuals with disabilities, case managers for individuals with disabilities, schools, durable medical equipment vendors, etc). Inquiries/acceptance arrangements can be made by toll-free number, local numbers, email and/or in person. Donations are tax-deductible.
Acquisition of donation(s) may occur through donor drop-off, staff delivery, and/or donor-to-user. Each donation will be assessed on a case-by-case basis at the closest local level for both acceptance and delivery means. All programs will make every effort to assure donation variety as much as possible; however, some donation items will be strictly donor-to-user.
Reassignment of donation(s) occurs when donated items have been evaluated, sanitized, refurbished and inventoried. Each reuse center makes every effort to assure that the equipment/devices are restored to manufacturers’ specifications and operates as intended. Whenever possible, recipients are encouraged to pick up the requested device to try it out. Consumers are provided with maintenance information and receive equipment orientation to ensure appropriate use and safety.
The Alabama AT Reuse Network, currently a collaborative partnership of six (6) community-based programs, receives and distributes donated AT and medical equipment "free of charge " statewide. To access the online equipment database visit: http://al.at4all.com.
