AEIS Supports Information
Alabama's Early Intervention System is a statewide system of resource access,
services and supports for eligible infants and toddlers with disabilities and
their families. All early intervention programs in Alabama that receive federal
or state early intervention funding will assist an eligible family in
understanding resources available in their community and in receiving any of
the 16 services that are considered appropriate for the eligible child and
family.^ return to top ^
In Alabama, a survey of eligible families is completed each fiscal year.
Eligible families who have a child who is transitioned into the preschool
program under the state Department of Education are also encouraged to complete
a telephone or written survey after their child has turned 3.

In Alabama, workshops, family forums, early intervention system training and
conferences are held statewide to share important information about
AEIS
, family support-related research, and best practices for providing services to
young children with disabilities. Most of these events are free. Many of these
workshops are coordinated with the state Department of Education and other
agencies and providers. Interested parents and family members, program
administrators, public and private service providers and community service
organization representatives are encouraged to attend.

The Early Intervention System has developed a statewide resource directory to
assist families and community providers in locating resources for infants and
toddlers with developmental delays. This directory includes public and private
service providers, early intervention professionals, family support
organizations and other groups that provide services to infants and toddlers
with disabilities and their families in Alabama. Inclusion in the directory
does not imply an endorsement by the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation
Services or its affiliated early intervention programs.^ return to top ^
Governor's Interagency Coordinating Council
The Interagency Coordinating Council is composed of families, early
intervention service providers, and agency, child-care and legislative
representatives who meet quarterly to advise and assist the lead agency, the
Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, in the development of Alabama's
Early Intervention System. Council meetings are open to the public. For
scheduled meetings dates and locations, or to obtain a copy of past meeting
minutes, contact

In Alabama, the early intervention system has undergone a monitoring process
by the federal funding organization for the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act ( IDEA
), which requires each state to provide early intervention (Part C) and special
education (Part B) to children with disabilities, ages birth through 21. This
process ensures that services are provided in accordance with the law and its
regulations. With the assistance of many other agencies and organizations that
help families, Alabama’s Early Intervention System compiled a report of its
efforts for the Office of Special Education Programs within the
U.S.
Department of Education. The second stage in this process required the state to
develop an improvement plan based on the findings of the self assessment.
